Hank Steinbrenner speaks out … what else is new?

“Red Sox Nation?” Hank says. “What a bunch of [expletive] that is. That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. Go anywhere in America and you won’t see Red Sox hats and jackets, you’ll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country. We’re going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order.”

Swiped from the NY Times.

While Hank can have a big mouth at times, he makes a great point. ESPN is based in Connetticutt. 99.9% of the people who work there are Red Sox fans. They need to hire more Yankee fans (like me) to try and balance things out a little bit. Or at least the sports casters need to stop being so Boston-biased. There are fans who like other teams besides the Red Sox. I guess they can’t get that through their thick heads up in CT.

In football, the Cowboys are America’s team, although I beg to differ. In baseball, I do believe the Yankees are America’s team. Of course, there are many bandwagon Yankee fans. Any team in any sport who’s winning at the time has bandwagon fans. Don’t forget those female fans who only watch sports for the “hot athletes” and wear pink jerseys or hats. That aggravates me so much. At least wear your teams colors so you don’t look like an idiot. Anyway, back to my point. The Yankees have the biggest current stadium, and sell out many a times during the season. They have the highest attendance record practically every year. I can’t even tell you how many people I see wearing the Yankee logo every day. There’s no doubt the Yankees are the most popular team. Fans either love them or love to hate them. There’s no in-between when it comes to the New York Yankees.

“We’re going to put the Yankees back on top and restore the universe to order.”

With all the youth aboard, lets hope so Hank. Lets hope so.

The beginning of a beautiful blog-ship..

So, this is my first post in my first blog. Yes, my first blog. Aren’t you excited? Well, I’m not entirely sure how often I will be updating this thing. I’m not even sure how many people are going to be reading this thing. Ahem. I know I still have a lot to learn about the Yankees, and baseball in general. But I thought I’d give this blogging thing a shot. It never hurts to try. I’m not going to make a post saying “woohoo, Yankees win!” every time they win a game. I’m going to try to keep this blog about my opinions on the Yankees, the players, and just baseball in general.

Seems like Spring Training is going well. Joe G’s working the players out really hard. Hopefully this means there won’t be as many hamstring injuries as last year. The last thing the Yankees need is to be injury-plagued. Especially in the rotation. Look what happened last year (not that I’m dwelling on the past), with starting pitching hammy injuries: Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina, and Phil Hughes. All essential pieces to the rotation. And don’t forget the injuries to Roger Clemens, Darrell Rasner, Jeff Karstens, and dare I say it, Carl Pavano. With Joba Chamberlain in the bullpen for what looks like the first half of the season, the Yankees need the starting rotation to stay healthy.

There’s a feeling of promise and hope going around with somewhat of a fresh start. New manager, lots of new, young players, and of course the “Big 3″. Put that together with a few veteran players and an explosive lineup, I have to say, as a Yankee fan, I’m really looking foward to the 2008 season.

And to see how long I can keep this blogging thing going.
